It seems like forever ago that I last got to see Ensi… but finally they were back in the UK to promote the release of their new album ‘From Afar’. Having headlining Pagan Fest in the UK last year expectations of Ensiferum were high and a memorable gig expected… and they certainly didn’t disappoint.

Support come from young Finnish death metal band Tracedawn who in my opinion were far better then the following act. Metsatoll hailed from Estonia and proved that just because you play folk metal and have some unusual instruments on stage doesn’t make you good despite how fashionable the folk metal idea seems to be getting.

With each song full of singalong chants and choruses, the audience were in full voice throughout the show and the band seemed to respond accordingly which definitely sets this ahead of last years show at Koko. The Scala was quite a way under capacity, but the atmosphere, noise and general rowdiness from the audience still made it feel full. In the end it was an absolutely solid performance from the band that seemed to be over as soon as it started. But there still feels like something is missing…. maybe it’s because of the backing tracks or because of Petri being glued to the spot for most of the show. A little bit of showmanship maybe… like Turisas for example. But no doubt they will continue to get stronger just as their music is.
