Papa Roach returned to London this weekend to once again promote their latest effort Metamorphosis….

You’d hardly recognise the band when comparing their debut album to the new one. Their rap-rock nu-metal past has been left behind in favour of a more grown up Hard Rock sound. Metamorphosis easily the best work they have done since the first two cd’s… and the band themselves seem rejuvenated and full of energy once again as a live act.

Heaven’s Basement (which I was unable to photograph due to a guestlist fuck-up) open the night with a strong set and sound like a very tight band these days despite recent line-up changes, followed by Madina Lake who are much more entertaining to photograph then they are to actually listen too. They play well enough to be fair and if I was 10 years younger then I’d probably love it. Papa Roach however I was listening to almost 10 years ago, and would be quite happy to hear the debut played in full tonight. The set on the whole is pretty damn ace and performed at full throttle… but its the old stuff that makes me want to jump around like a loon.

As far as the photography is concerned, the house light are in full effect and the spot lamps are even used. Unfortunately Jacoby was running around the stage so much that they light operators couldn’t always keep up with him. The band also had these strips of LED’s on the floor in front of them. No problems when they were glowing blue, but as always the red was pretty hot creating a horrible glow so you had to be paying attention to your settings or you’d have easily overexposed. The jump shot above is easily one of my favourite shots of the year… even if it is not perfectly pin-sharp. There was room to speed up my shutter too but as it was completely unexpected I’m very pleased with the result.

So after a dodgy few years the future once again looks bright for Papa Roach and I’m sure they will continue to get better long after the ghost of Nu-Metal has left us.
