Islington were the hosts for Matisyahu’s only and completely sold out show on his current tour of Europe. I had absolutely no idea what to expect from the show as his 2006 chart hit “King Without a Crown” didn’t register on my musical radar…
The show was opened by instrumental Dub Trio who also formed part of Matisyahu’s band. There music sounded pretty good although I have to admit I was paying more attention to making some crazy long exposure photos as I have felt a bit out of practice using flash recently.
I don’t really know how I would describe Matisyahu’s music…. Reggae or Urban are probably the obvious choices. His music is a million miles away from what I would normally listen too, but this often results in a fantastic live experience. The show itself was immensely enjoyable with the very varied crowd loving every minute.
Due to the smoke machine having died before the show, it made the stage look a bit bare without what would have been a colourful glow in the background, and this resulted in cleaner photos but also made the lights look even brighter due to no diffusing. At least that’s how it felt. I got some nice clean photos but I feel they are lacking a bit of variety and the usual array of hand gestures and expressions that I always hope to get.
