Billy Talent hit Brixton Academy to promote their latest album in what would turn out to be a classic show…

Canterbury opened the night with a set of pop-punk-emo type stuffs. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve seen them live in the last year supporting different bands, but this was by far their biggest challenge. The music doesn’t really do anything for me at all but they have a tune or two in their bag so I’m sure it won’t be the last time I hear them.

Then there is Cancer Bats. These guys were the reason I first wanted to shoot the gig. I absolutely love the ‘Hail Destroyer’ album (samples on myspazz if you haven’t heard them before… ). A truly great balls-out rock record. They have never disappointed live in any of the previous times I have seen them… and were awesome to photo on the one occasion I have had the chance. Well they never disappointed until now. It wasn’t them personally, but the sound quality was terrible, and the lighting was even worse totally ruining the occasion for me.

I’ve not paid any attention to Billy Talent since their enjoyable debut album was released way back in 2003 to much hype from the UK music press. Two albums later and these Canadians seem to be getting a bit of attention once again and judging by the latest album ‘Billy Talent III’ it is much deserved.

The band burst into action pretty much as soon as they hit the stage and I was blown away by how good the sound quality was at Brixton. With the guys being on top form too it was almost like listening to them on record. Lighting was great to get some decent photos. A bit more white front light would have been good, but the blue and yellow was bright enough to work with. Ben Kowalewics on lead vocals pretty much sums up what Billy Talent are all about with a highly energetic performance covering all of the stage and getting the audience to join in.

Set was made up of most of the new album with the best of the others although I couldn’t tell you the full setlist, but the ones I’m familiar with like ‘Line and Sinker’, ‘Devil In a Midnight Mass’, ‘Diamond on a Landmine’. Red Flag would have been on the list too but I left early to guaranty I got into the secret Foxboro Hot Tubs (the alter-ego of Green Day) gig at the Garage.

More photos coming soon!!
