The Last time I saw Paradise Lost live was for their 20th anniversary show at the Kentish Town Forum in September last year. It was a disappointing show impaired with poor sound quality in what should have been a great celebration of their history. They returned to London on a cold and dark night to play at Islington Academy with support from Engel and Katatonia…
Engel show a lot of promise with a fairly decent set of industrial-esq metal. The one thing that let it down was the volume appeared to have been turned up way over 11 which made everything sound far too loud and pretty messy.
Katatonia on the other hand have just returned with a new album and I was really looking forward to seeing them again. The performance was infinitely better then their set at Bloodstock in the summer with which there was something wrong about doom/prog metal played in the sunshine, but tonight everything is perfect. New album, ‘Night Is the New Day’ is sure to be among my favourites of the year, but its the tracks from previous album, ‘The Great Cold Distance’ which really made my night as I missed them touring that CD.
The first thing that shocks me about Paradise Lost’s set is that they have turned the lights on. They have always been bathed in red or blue lights when I have previously seen them and frontman Nick Holmes is often as moody as his music suggests he’d be. But tonight things are a lot better and he almost looks like he is enjoying it.
While I have not yet heard their latest work titled ‘Faith Divides Us – Death Unites Us’, from the live tracks it feels a lot more like the modern Paradise Lost, then the previous album did. The sell out crowd at the Academy are obviously more familiar with the new album then I am as they sing back the words to the band with the title track from the album already sounding like a fan favourite.
The set list ran like thisss:
Rise of Denial
Pity the Sadness
Erased
I Remain
As I Die, The Enemy
First Light
Eternal, Enchantment
Frailty
One Second
Forever Failure
Requiem
