A night of stoner rock at Islington Academy….
Winnebago Deal opened the night with exactly the kind of manic set you expect. While not being the kind of music I listen to, what they do, they do well and create a pretty huge racket for a two piece band.
Fu Manchu are I band I haven’t listened to for the best part of a decade since the release of there much loved California Crossing album. The sparse crowd which greeted the openers had suddenly turned into a near sell-out and they brought a feeling of anticipation to the gig. From hearing them live the whole ‘Stoner Rock’ tag which they have been given seems a bit strange as none of their songs sound like they have references to drugs, I can only guess it is more to do with the associated scene… skating for example. Without really knowing the music it was a difficult gig to get into, but the fans obviously loved it after their first gig over here for around 3 years.
